MPhil Essay 1 Appointment

MPhil Essay 1 Appointment In-Person

As scholars who study a living, dynamic literature, we can too easily fall into habits of presentism—either by taking contemporary texts and forms as something new, substantially different, and somehow better than what was produced in the past, or by projecting present ideas and perspectives onto interpretations or depictions of the past.

The goal of this assignment is to learn to use archival research to broaden and deepen your sense of what children’s literature is and has been—to get a larger and more accurate picture of the scope of the literature you are studying. As we discussed in the sesson on archival research, you can focus your research and approach the assignment from any number of angles.

To consult the special collections material (Homerton College Library Stack on iDiscover) please book an appointment

If there are particular items you wish to look at during your visit please email the details in advance to the Library (library@homerton.cam.ac.uk) to ensure they are ready for you when you arrive. Not all items are in the main library building, so will take some time to fetch. We recommend requesting no more than 6 items per visit.

If you are uncertain of what you want to look at, any information you can email about your area of interest (theme, author, period etc) will help staff to identify some potential items in advance.

The modern children’s literature collection, which is borrowable, can be browsed at any time as you are an MPhil CACL student. If you are not a member of Homerton College, please register at the enquiry desk.
